Welcome to the Weird West

Hello chosen backers!

I wanted to drop you a line to let you know that Maurice Broaddus, who brought us "Big Momma Saves the World" in Never Too Old, also has a story in Outland's upcoming Weird Western anthology, The Good, the Bad, and the Uncanny.

Here's a bit about the project:

Gunslingers. Lawmen. Snake-oil Salesmen. Cowboys. Mad Scientists. And a few monsters.

The Old West has never been wilder!

THE GOOD, THE BAD, AND THE UNCANNY presents sixteen original and never-before-published adventures by some of today’s most visionary writers who have spun wildly offbeat tales of gunmen, lawmen, magic, and weird science.

Saddle up with Josh Malerman, Scott Sigler, Keith DeCandido, Cullen Bunn, R.S. Belcher, Greg Cox, Jeffrey Mariotte, Laura Anne Gilman, Aaron Rosenberg, Maurice Broaddus, John G. Hartness, Carrie Harris, James A. Moore, Marguerite Reed, C. Edward Sellner, Carrie Harris, and Jennifer Brody! These tales twist the American West into a place of darkness, shadows, sudden death, terror in the night, bold heroism, devious magic, and shocking violence.

Each story blazes a new trail through very strange territory –discovering weird science, ancient evil, mythic creatures, and lightning-fast action.

Edited by Jonathan Maberry, NY Times bestselling author of GHOSTWALKERS: A DEADLANDS NOVEL, the Joe Ledger Thrillers, V-WARS, and KAGEN THE DAMNED.

Sound interesting? Pop by the Kickstarter and check it out! (We've had at least one Never Too Old backer already stop and say hi!)

Thanks, always, for working to save the world, no matter how many apocalypses we have to face.

It was an age of adventure.

An age of sorcery.

An age of unrelenting horror.

Sword and sorcery and pulp horror go hand-in-hand. Sinister enchanters working  foul magic. Hideous beasts lurking in shadowy dungeons. Blasphemous elder gods uncoiling from forgotten and forbidden temples.

SWORDS IN THE SHADOWS, the first anthology from the Outer Shadows imprint of Outland Entertainment, features twenty-two stories with a bloody stake driven into the heart of both the horror and fantasy camps. Herein, you will find fantasy worlds, brave warriors, fabulous creatures, wondrous magic. But you will also uncover bloodcurdling chills, spine-tingling horror, and an examination of those things that truly terrify.

Each story features a unique take on the sword, sorcery, and horror genre. New heroes. New terrors. New worlds of high adventure and loathsome terror.

Within the pages of this tome you will find:

  • Undead legions
  • Restless horrors
  • Shapechangers
  • Fiendish sorcerers
  • Sorcerous fiends
  • Unspeakable monsters
  • Undaunted warriors
  • Magical swords
  • Magical wrenches
  • And much, much more

New visions of adventure and horror await within the pages of this one-of-a-kind anthology!

We hope you'll pop over to the Kickstarter page and check it out!

'Til the next apocalypse,

Library Journal's Pick of the month!
about 3 years ago – Wed, Mar 08, 2023 at 09:04:53 AM

Hey there chosen backers!

I wanted to share some amazingly cool news with you: Never Too Old to Save the World was featured in Library Journal as their "Pick of the Month"! Yesterday, I visited the local library where I worked years ago, and one of the librarians, a former co-worker, pulled it out to show me—she's the one who underlined my name. Here's the review:

Text: The “Chosen Ones” here are all middle-aged if not a bit older and have lives and careers that they are expected to set aside for a destiny that they may have wanted, once upon a time, but no longer do. The many ways in which they manage this destiny anyway, on their own terms, make this a marvelous read for SF/F fans of all ages. The standout stories here are Jim C. Hines’s science-fictional “Launch Day Milkshakes,” featuring a woman getting back at her misogynistic boss with the help of a brainship, an elderly cat lady, and all of her many cats; “Lean In: The Lord of Hell Is Coming” by Ericka Kahler, a Buffy-esque take on outmaneuvering both heaven and hell with the power of stock options and meaningful work; and the only previously published work in the anthology, T. Kingfisher’s award-winning “Jackalope Wives,” a fable about the power of having versus wanting and knowing at the end that the road taken was the right one.VERDICT Highly recommended for lovers of woman-forward SF/F and any reader still waiting for that wardrobe to open.Reviewed by Marlene Harris , Feb 01, 2023
Library Journal Review

I am so, so tickled that people are finding this anthology and loving it. Thank you all for being part of making that happen!

If you're curious what Outland Entertainment has been up to lately, and you'd like to take your own mid-life call to adventure in a city rife with thieves and scoundrels (including the players), please check out our newest tabletop role playing game, Ocarus: The Crescent City. I had a blast working on this, and I think it has the same brand of humor found in some of the stories in the Never Too Old anthology. If you're interested in rpgs, I hope you'll give it a look!
